Exams & Progression

1. Do students take dance exams?

If they wish to do so, yes!

2. What exam boards do you follow?

We follow British Theatre Dance Association.

3. Are exams compulsory?

No! Exams are not compulsory, but are a really nice marker of your child's progress and the certificate is a nice keepsake (as well as an accredited qualification in the case of Graded exams).

4. How do students progress to higher levels?

Students progress to higher levels based on a combination of factors, including their technical ability, understanding of choreography, musicality, commitment, and overall readiness. Our teachers continually assess students throughout the year and advance the class when they feel students are confident and secure in the required skills of their current level. In some cases, students may also be invited to take exams or assessments, which can be used as one of the tools to support progression. Progressing to higher levels with AWDS does not require a change in the class chosen.

Performances & Opportunities

1. Do students participate in shows or performances?

All students are invited to take part in our annual shows, open day performances, and special anniversary showcases. While participation is not compulsory, we highly encourage it as performing is an important part of dance training. It helps students build confidence, develop stage presence, and experience the joy of sharing their hard work with an audience.

We understand that not every child may feel ready to perform on stage, and we fully respect each family's decision. That said, we do our best to make performances a fun and supportive experience for all involved.

Generally, we try to hold a performance of some sort every year.

2. Will I be required to pay anything to participate in a show/open day?

Yes, there are a few costs associated with taking part in our shows, and we will always let you know of these in advance. For a show these typically include:

  • A participation fee to help cover rehearsal time and production costs

  • Costume fees (varies depending on the number of dances a student is involved in)

  • Tickets for any family or guests who wish to attend the performance

At AWDS, we do not receive external funding for these events. This means that all expenses — including theatre hire, additional rehearsal space, costumes, lighting, sound, and technical support — are covered by the school. We also take great pride in the fact that we pay our staff fairly for the time, energy, and care they invest in bringing each performance to life.

We strive to keep costs as reasonable as possible while still providing a professional and rewarding performance experience for our students.

3. Are there opportunities for competitions or external events?

Yes!
